Caring for and displaying your icon
A few simple practices will help protect your icon and create a prayer corner that feels peaceful, intentional, and lasting.
Protecting your icon
Choose a dry interior space
Keep icons away from water, high humidity, and major temperature changes.
Avoid strong direct sunlight
Soft, indirect light helps protect printed colors and wood over time.
Dust gently
Use a clean, soft, dry cloth. Avoid household cleaners and abrasive materials.
Handle with clean hands
Lift by the wooden edges when practical and protect the printed face from scratches.
A place for regular prayer
A prayer corner can begin simply with an icon of Christ and the Theotokos, then grow over time with patron saints, family saints, a cross, and prayer books.
Choose a clean, respectful place. Keep candles and oil lamps a safe distance from icons and other flammable materials, and never leave a flame unattended.
The purpose is not perfection, but a steady place that helps turn the heart toward prayer.
