Which Orthodox Icons Should I Buy First?

If you are beginning an Orthodox home prayer corner, you do not need a large collection. Start with the icons that help center your prayer on Christ and the life of the Church.

1. An icon of Jesus Christ

An icon of Christ is the natural foundation of a prayer corner. Christ Pantocrator, the Holy Face, Christ the Good Shepherd, and other traditional images all direct the heart toward the Lord.

2. An icon of the Theotokos

An icon of the Theotokos reminds us of the Incarnation and her faithful response to God. Choose a traditional image that draws you toward prayer rather than selecting only by decoration.

3. Your patron saint

Your patron or namesake saint is a meaningful next choice. If you are not sure who your patron saint is, ask your parish priest or baptismal sponsor.

4. A Guardian Angel or family patron

A Guardian Angel icon or icons of family patron saints can make a prayer corner more personal. Feast-day icons may be added gradually as your prayer life and understanding grow.
