About Holy Prophet Elijah
The Holy Prophet Elijah, also called Elias, proclaimed faithfulness to the living God in ancient Israel. Scripture recounts his prayer on Mount Carmel and his being taken up into heaven in a whirlwind, with a chariot and horses of fire. The Orthodox Church celebrates his feast on July 20.
This composition shows Elijah ascending in a fiery chariot, with the Prophet Elisha below receiving his mantle.
